Helping Hand Food Pantry Receives Venison Donation from FHFH

Texas Hill Country FHFH donated 983 pounds of nutritious venison to Helping Hand Food Pantry in Bandera, Texas.
We thank Danny Bezet, Coordinator for Texas Hill Country FHFH, the hunters who donated deer and financial donors who made it possible to give a “helping hand” to people in need in the Bandera community.
2021 – A Year for an Abundance of Compassion, Kindess and Joyful Giving
Have you ever experienced a time of hardship and someone helped you? Do you remember how it made you feel? Were you grateful? Did it give you hope? Did you feel like you mattered knowing that someone cared about you?
When people are going through hardships and somebody gives them a hand it makes a positive difference in their life and outlook. Helping others not only aids the person in need, but it makes our communities better – now and in the future. And there can be a ripple effect from the act of kindness because one day the person who was helped may pay it forward by helping someone else in need because they know what it’s like to have someone care and help them.
Last year was hard for a lot of people. The heartache of loved ones passing away, the loss of a job or reduced hours that resulted in difficult decisions such as which bills to pay and struggling to put food on the table. The COVID pandemic is not over yet and we all are looking forward to better days ahead. When people remark what we need most in 2021 it’s often: the end of COVID, employment opportunities and financial recovery. We also need compassion, kindness and sharing.
With so many individuals and families turning to food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries for food, these organizations are in greater need than ever. FHFH provides meat to these organizations at no cost.
We can be there for our neighbors in need – both now and in the future – because we have amazing supporters and volunteers! Donations of deer, livestock or a financial gift make the difference between someone going hungry or having a meal. Please join with FHFH today and be a beacon of hope to your struggling neighbors.

“Helping the Hungry” – The Gift of a Good meal
In WBOC’s Outdoors Delmarva video about helping the hungry, Mid Shore FHFH Coordinator Amy Cawley talks about how FHFH enables hunters to donate much needed meat to food banks and feeding ministries in Maryland. The year 2020 has been a year like no other for the Maryland Food Bank Eastern Shore. The Maryland Food Bank is seeing nearly double the food distribution across Maryland.
Mid Shore FHFH donated nearly 400 pounds of venison to the food bank. One deer provides 160-200 servings of nutritious meat. Funding is needed to pay the processing fees for deer donated to FHFH’s participating butchers. Please help your neighbors in need by donating deer and making a financial gift to FHFH.

Southwest Ohio FHFH Donates 400 pounds of venison
Tim Fisher, Co-coordinator for Southwest Ohio FHFH, recently harvested a nice buck. He donated it to FHFH at Davidson Meat Processing and asked for the meat to go to the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Community Support Center – an agency that had sent him a very moving summary of their mission with a request to join FHFH this season.
Tim received this note of thanks from Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Community Support Center:
We picked up from Davidson’s yesterday. They gave us 400 lbs. of venison, including Tim’s. We were blown away! We’ve been distributing it to clients all day today! We posted about it on Facebook yesterday and are going to include it in our newsletter this week. Thank you both so much for coordinating this for us! We didn’t have to pick up any Kroger meat today, which was wonderful. Thank you again!

FHFH’s COVID-19 Hunger Response in Maryland
FHFH received grants from three community foundations in Maryland for hunger relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to grant funds awarded to FHFH by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, The Community Foundation of Frederick County and the Mid-Shore Community Foundation we have been able to provide 4,430 pounds of beef and venison (17,720 servings) to date to the food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries in Caroline, Dorchester, Frederick, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester Counties in Maryland.
The Gift of Kindness and Hope
This year has been hard for a lot of people. Everyone has been affected in some way by the COVID pandemic. Your family may be fortunate to celebrate Christmas this year with gifts and food for a holiday meal.
However, there are many families who are struggling to get by due to soaring unemployment or work hours being reduced. What will their Christmas be like this year? It’s not just “will they have toys for their children?” – it’s “will they have food to put on their plates?” No one should go hungry, especially at Christmas.

More than 50 million people may face hunger due to the impact by COVID. One in four children may not know where their next meal will come from. Christmas is the perfect time to remember the difference that sharing and giving back can make.
Food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries can make the difference between someone having a meal or going hungry. FHFH provides nutritious much-needed meat to these agencies at no cost. The need is great and we need your help.

The Community Foundation of Frederick County Provides Funding to FHFH
The Community Foundation of Frederick County has awarded $1,000 in grant funding to the Frederick County, Maryland Chapter of Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry. This funding will assist FHFH in providing approximately 2,100 servings of nutritious meat to the food banks and feeding programs that feed the needy of Frederick County.
On behalf of those in Frederick County who struggle with hunger, we thank The Community Foundation of Frederick County for its generosity and support of our mission to end hunger.

Thanking Our Veterans for Their Sacrifice and Service
On Veterans Day we honor the heroic efforts of the men and women who served in the U.S. Military. Veterans Day provides us an opportunity to salute and thank the brave individuals who have served our country – past and present.
Veterans, like millions of other people in our country, experience the same challenges of affordable housing and low income. In 2019, 1,139,738 veterans had income below poverty level with 490,158 of them being 65 years of age or older. (Statista, Poverty Status of Veterans in the United States in 2019, by Age).
In 2018 there were 1.5 million veterans living in a household that completely relied on SNAP to supplement their food intake. (Military Families Learning Network, July 2019). However, SNAP benefits are not always enough to provide an adequate amount of food, so some veterans also reply on food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries to have enough food for themselves and their families.
And of the more than 40 million people Feeding America and their network of food banks serve each year, 20 percent of households include someone who has served or is currently serving in the U.S. military. (Feeding America, June 2018).
It is heartbreaking that so many veterans struggle to put food on their table! Our veterans fought and sacrificed for our country. Now we need to fight for them to make sure they don’t go hungry. One way to thank a veteran for their sacrifice and service is by helping them have enough food for themselves and their families.
