FAQ’s

IS DEER AND OTHER BIG GAME MEAT SAFE ?

Yes, all game that is donated to the program is handled by a qualified meat processor that is contracted by FHFH. Venison and other big game is nutritious, low in fat and high in protein.

AREN'T DEER HUNTED JUST IN THE FALL ?

While most recreational hunting occurs in the fall, some antlerless deer seasons now occur in the winter and most crop damage permits are issued for the spring and summer. Livestock can also be donated year round.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO DONATE A DEER ?

In most cases, nothing! If you donate an entire animal, all processing costs are paid for by the program depending on available funding. We recommend calling ahead to the participating butcher shop you plan to use to verify current participation status.

DOES MY DONATION HELP IN MY LOCAL COMMUNITY ?

Yes, in most cases the donated meat is picked up by a charitable organization or hunger relief ministry located in the county where it was donated for distribution to the needy of the community.

CAN I DEDUCT OR "WRITE OFF" MY DONATION FOR TAXES?

Yes, FHFH is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization so all financial contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. Some hunters and farmers have also been able to claim the value of their in-kind deer, elk or livestock donations. Please consult your accountant or tax preparer for advice regarding any tax related questions.

HOW DOES AN INDIVIDUAL IN NEED OBTAIN VENISON ?

The meat donated and processed by FHFH is distributed to end recipients by local food banks, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other caritable hunter relief programs.
